Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. – James 1:17

James 1:17 tells us that every (without exception) good gift and every (without exception) perfect gift comes from above and in whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. The verse reveals the very nature of God – unchanging, perfect, and good. His goodness is a constant force that can not be defeated. His very essence is good.

He also gives gifts. Just like a loving father who loves to see his children happy, God graciously gives us spiritual gifts. He surprises us, he rewards us, he reminds us of who he is, and he makes our dreams come true! In return, He expects us to care for the things we are trusted with, and to be generous towards others.

As you continue to reflect on this verse, ask yourself how would you care for a perfect gift? Would you keep it in a safe box or hide it somewhere where it can not be found? Would you care for it as a precious possession or will you be negligent? Would you sell it, keep it as a family heirloom, or would you give it to someone as a gift?

Prayer: Father, I thank you for every good and perfect gift. Holy Spirit, help me to care for my gifts and to follow your instructions. I want to be a good steward with the things I am trusted with. In Jesus Christ’s name, amen.
