I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. – John 16:33
The best news ever is that Jesus has already overcome the world. We can walk confidently in our victory in Christ. This does not mean that we can do anything we want – it only means that the path to victory has been established by Jesus. If you want victory, follow Jesus, not the world’s definition of victory.
The world gives us all kinds of ideas about victory – you can be victorious as an olympic champion, as a famous musician, as a successful politician, etc. By the world’s standards this is victory. But the Biblical standards call us blessed, favored, etc. Our victory is in Christ, who came to heal, to restore, to save, and who willingly and obediently gave his life for us. This is not the image of success portrayed in the world.
The Bible tells us that worldly success is build on the lust of the flesh and on the pride of the eyes, while as Christians, our lives are freely given and Jesus is our cornerstone. To walk in victory is to follow Jesus’ example and willingly and obediently embrace the cross daily.
Prayer: Father, we thank you for Jesus, who came to save, to restore, and to give. Help us become givers according to your will and purpose for our lives. In Jesus Christ’s name, amen. Thank you, Holy Spirit.
