Love is not proud – 1 Corinthians 13:4
Pride brought Lucifer down. Pride is still the light of satan. A proud heart, a proud person, a proud nation. Whatsoever feeds on pride, is not love.
Pride is defined as deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements (Oxford Languages). Pride has a taste, it has a feeling attached to it, and a form of pleasure. The word “deep” points to the heart – there are roots of pride in all of us. Only the word of God can cut deep and destroy the foundations of pride in our lives. The blood of Jesus cleanses us fro all sin, including those caused by pride.
To walk in love is to walk in His commandments. We should go deep into the word of God, asking for forgiveness, confessing our pride and asking God to destroy the seeds of pride. Pride is not easy to uproot. It is a constant battle and only with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can escape the traps set by proud people.
Another way to battle pride is through humility. There is false humility, which again is a form of pride – pretense and hypocrisy. The enemy works hard to feed our ego, to make us look and feel great. It takes the spirit of discernment to recognize pride in others. We must treat them with love and gently lead them to understanding and the light of heaven.
Father, in the name of Jesus, help us to properly face the pride in our hearts and in the hearts of others. Teach us meekness and long-suffering when the things that displease you begin to displease us. Help us to understand what is your good and pleasing will for those who are trapped in pride. In Jesus Christ’s name, amen. Thank you, Holy Spirit.
