whatsoever things are pure – Philippians 4:8

Now that we understand the power of choice and the freedom to choose good over evil, we might follow the instruction of apostle Paul and go a little further by choosing to dwell on whatsoever is pure.

Pure is defined as not mixed with any other substance or material – clear, unblended, unmixed, uncontaminated, and so on. In a world polluted by technology, search engines, air pollution, and so on, finding the time to learn about yourself, in a place of quiet and peaceful reflection might be a challenge. It seems as if the world is already conquered by the knowledge of ai, Google maps, GPS, and computer systems. Purity is no longer sought after.

I am sure that Paul felt the same way in Rome. He faced spiritual contamination – people were worshipping and sacrificing to all kinds of gods. The Roman Empire was a massive force of human conquest. There was no concept of a single deity ruling over man, except probably for a Jewish province, whereJesus was crucified. Paul came to the Gentile world with the message of Jesus. He faced an empire ruled by belief systems, demonic entities, powers and principalities, and met people from around the world. Sounds familiar?

The good news is – Jesus is still the source of all purity. We don’t have to climb mountain picks, travel to remote islands, or visit an oasis in a desert to find virgin territories. In Him we can dwell in ever-present, never-ending purity: ask and it will be given to you, seek and you’ll find, knock and the door will be opened unto you (Matthew 7:7-8).

Father, Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. Thank you for helping us reach the ends of the earth with his message. In Jesus Christ’s name, amen. Thank you, Holy Spirit.
