Have Peace: Self-Control

Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control. – Proverbs: 25:28

Peace and self-control are both attributes of the fruit of the spirit described in Galatians 5:22-23. We can’t build a life on foundations that can easily be destroyed. Have you seen houses build on sand? They will not last long, because the foundation is flimsy.

But the opposite is also true. There are times and seasons when we go through destruction of strongholds. These are areas of our lives built on solid ground but are hindering us and have to be conquered, subdued, and overpowered. These are the Jericho-like places before the promised land. Places from our past that prevent us from reaching our promised future.

When destruction comes, we need peace and self-control while the foundations are shaken. Praise and worship can do the job better than any form of warfare. The Israelite had to walk around the walls of Jericho singing and praising God, instead of fighting the men behind the walls. It didn’t look like a smart military strategy, but the obedience to God’s instructions always brings victory.

Father, uproot every stronghold that hinders me from reaching my promised land. In Jesus Christ’s name, amen. Thank you, Holy Spirit.
