Thou shalt not steal – Exodus 20:15
All glory belongs to God. When we think of stealing, we tend to relate to material goods, money, and riches of various kinds, but what about glory?
Glory is defined as “honor, admiration, praise, and high esteem”. Satan’s iniquity manifested in an attempt to steal God’s glory by becoming an object of worship and self-exaltation; Eve’s choice to eat from the forbidden fruit was driven by the desire to become “like God“; and Absalom’s plan to cease his father’s throne led to betrayal and ultimately to his own death. Seeking one’s own glory is dangerous, but giving glory leads to a closer relationship with the one who deserves all the glory.
Faith Exercise:
Spend time in prayer and worship, examining your life. Can you spot areas, where glory has been given to someone/something other than God? If so, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you overcome the glory-thief.
The Bible teaches us to give honor where honor is due (Romans 13:7). Who are the people in your life who deserve honor? Think of ways to honor them in private, or publicly. Write down some ideas and keep them handy as you begin to build habits of honoring others. As you do so, God too will honor you in ways you never expected or imagined!
